London's Gay Sauna Scene

London has a well-established gay sauna scene centred around two main venues in Central London. Compared to some European cities it is a smaller scene in terms of venue count, but both main venues are large, well-run and internationally recognised within the gay community. They operate differently from each other in terms of atmosphere and clientele, and knowing which suits you before you go makes for a better first visit.

How Gay Saunas Work

A gay sauna is a private adult venue offering sauna and steam facilities alongside social and play spaces. Entry is typically straightforward: you pay at the door, receive a towel and a locker key, and access the facilities. Most London saunas are open to adult men only. Some have age restrictions requiring ID. There is no obligation to engage with anyone and many visitors come purely for the sauna and steam facilities and the social atmosphere.

On arrival you will typically be shown a locker room where you change, leave your clothes and belongings, and access the rest of the venue wrapped in a towel. The layout varies by venue but commonly includes a dry sauna, steam room, showers, a social lounge or cafe area, private cubicles or cabins available for an additional fee, and in larger venues a jacuzzi or spa pool. Facilities for personal hygiene are provided and using them is standard etiquette.

The atmosphere in London gay saunas is generally relaxed and social as well as sexual. Many visitors spend time in the lounge, talk to other guests and use the sauna and steam as a place to unwind. Weekday afternoons are quieter and more mixed in age. Friday and Saturday nights after the bars close tend to be busier with a younger crowd.

Sweatbox Soho

Sweatbox is the most central London gay sauna, located in Soho within walking distance of the main gay bars on Old Compton Street. It combines sauna and steam facilities with a gym, which makes it a genuine dual-use venue rather than purely adult in character. It is consistently the busiest London gay sauna by footfall and attracts an international crowd alongside regular local visitors. Opening hours run late to accommodate guests arriving after the bars close.

Pleasuredrome

Pleasuredrome is a 24-hour gay sauna near Waterloo station in South London, larger in scale than Sweatbox and oriented more exclusively toward the sauna experience. It offers a spa pool, steam rooms, a dry sauna, private deluxe rooms at an additional cost, a cafe and relaxation areas. Operating around the clock means it serves a different range of visit times including early morning and overnight, and the atmosphere shifts considerably depending on when you arrive.

Etiquette and First-Time Tips

No means no, without exception. The consent culture at London gay saunas is strong and most venues have staff present throughout. Unwanted attention or ignoring a clear signal is grounds for removal.

Phones and cameras are not permitted in most areas of any sauna. This is a firm rule and exists to protect everyone's privacy.

Personal hygiene matters. Using the shower facilities before entering the sauna and steam areas is expected rather than optional.

Lockers are your responsibility. Leave valuables at home if possible and use the locker correctly.
